in the year 1878, an inmate was standing next to a window
in the courthouse when lightning struck, leaving a photograph of
the terrified man on the courthouse window! It remains there to
this day.
Monroeville
can claim two literary greats; Harper
Lee was raised there and Truman Capote was one of her childhood friends
who spent summers there. To date, Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird"
has sold over 30 million copies in 18 languages.
Sheriff
Pat
Garrett was born in Chambers County, Alabama. He killed Billy the
Kid in Fort Sumner, New Mexico in 1881.
Texas Hero William
Barrett Travis spent most of his life in Monroe County
and Conecuh County, Alabama. At the age of twenty-six years,
he gave his life for the cause of Texas freedom. He was the commander
of the Alamo defenders, who were faced with the near-impossible
task of holding the Alamo
against the overwhelming forces of General Antonio de Santa Anna.
For thirteen days the defenders held the Alamo.
The only person known to have survived being struck by a meteorite
was Ann Hodges of Oak Grove, Alabama in November 1954. Read about

On May 13, 1914, J.
L. Barrow was born on Buckalew Mountain near Lafayette, Alabama. He
would become famous as Heavyweight champ, Joe Lewis.

Canyon - The beauty of this remotely located, privately-owned,
ancient canyon warrants its being designated a National Natural
Landmark! In addition to its beauty, it is a place boasting a near-pristine
ecology. It was featured on the Discovery Channel's presentation,
"When Dinosaurs Roamed America". It's located between
Russellville and Hamilton, near the community of Phil Campbell.
Cahaba
was Alabama's first state capital, today it's a ghost town. Read
