Located approximately forty miles east of Pensacola, Florida on Highway 98, is the town of Fort Walton Beach. Eglin Air Force Base is located there and some of the prettiest beaches in the world are located there. If one continues eastward on Highway 98 for about ten more miles, he or she will cross a bridge and enter Destin, another area of near-incomparable beauty and pristine beaches. Fort Walton Beach is named for George Walton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Fort Walton served to protect the narrows along this stretch of shoreline. It was garrisoned by the members of the 1st Florida Regiment, whose members were from the local area. In the immediate vicinity of Fort Walton was the Temple Indian Burial Mound. ATTRACTIONS: |
