Pensacola was the first European
settlement in the current United States. It was settled in 1559,
but it was destroyed five times before surviving in its current
location. During that time, residents of this location have flown
the flags of five different nations including Spain, France, England,
the United States and the Confederate States of America. Its motto
is "The City of Five Flags."
The Emerald Coast, where Pensacola
is located, was once known as the Miracle Strip. Its white sandy
beaches range from the Alabama state line to the west to Panama
City to the east. Included in this area are Perdido Key, Pensacola
Beach, Navarre Beach, Fort Walton Beach, Destin and Panama City.
There are lesser known beaches all along the way. Its white sand
remains constant at any point on the Emerald Coast, so named because
of the color of the Gulf waters in the area.
If history is one of your goals
during your next vacation, Pensacola is a reasonably priced choice
that will create a lot of fond memories. There are few places in
this city that don't carry some sort of historical significance,
from the hill north of the downtown area, where old Fort George
once stood to the old wharf area located around the south end of
Palafox Street. At the eastern end of Garden Street is Saint
Michaels Cemetery, old and full of very ornate tombstones. On
the west side is the Naval Air Station, the birthplace of naval
aviation! The downtown area itself is very old, historic and beautiful.
And remember, the Pensacola area also has the following attractions,
