Through
a violent history during colonial times in North America,
the colony of Georgia survived to become a state in 1788.
It was the fourth state and the last of the original thirteen
colonies.
Georgia
is bordered on the east by the Atlantic coast and South
Carolina. To its south is Florida. Its western border
is with Alabama and to its north are Tennessee and North
Carolina
The gold
dome that is atop the Georgia Capital Building is real
gold, hammered to the proper thickness and presented
to the state government by the citizens of Dahlonega,
Georgia, which is the site of the US' first gold rush. Note:
This was not the first US gold mine however, that was the
Reed Mine in North Carolina.
Notorious gunman John
Henry (Doc) Holliday was from Griffin, Georgia.
His father, Henry B. Holliday became the mayor of
Valdosta.
The Girl
Scouts of America was started in the home of Juliet
Gordon Low, in Savannah, in 1912.
Fred
Birchmore of Athens was the first man to
ever ride a bicycle around the world.
Rock N Roll bands, the
B-52s and REM
were organized and first performed in Athens.
The Allman
Brothers Band lost two of its members, Duane
Allman and Berry
Oakley in separate motorcycle accidents almost a
year apart and only a few blocks apart in Macon.
Paul Anderson (1932-1994)
of Toccoa was considered the world's strongest man. On June
12, 1957, he lifted a total of 6,270 pounds in a backlift,
which is still listed in the Guinness Book of World Records
as the greatest weight lifted by a human being
