    The city of Dallas was founded in 1841 by John Neely Bryan. In 1846, the Republic of Texas became the state of Texas as part of the United States. The small settlement was incorporated in 1856.
 
           
    It was a part of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Following the Civil War, it finally became a city in 1871.
 
           
    With the arrival of the railroad in 1873, Dallas was at the crossroads of the north-south railroad and the east-west railroads, putting it in an enviable position for shipping purposes. The town grew to quickly become a center of trade in grain, cotton and various merchandise of the era. In time, Dallas went from being an agricultural based economy to a financial based economy.
 
           
    In 1930, one-hundred miles to the east of Dallas, oil was discovered and the East Texas Oilfield became a hub of activity. Dallas almost immediately became the financial center for the oil industry in Texas and Oklahoma.
 
           
    In 1958, Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments invented the integrated circuit and Dallas became a producer of high-tech products.
 
           
    Tragically, on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was the victim of an assassin’s bullet as his motorcade drove past Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas.
 
           
    Because of the hit TV show, Dallas, the city became one of the most recognizable cities in the world.
